When Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer

When Should I Book My Wedding Photographer

When Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer?

Planning a wedding is hectic, I get it.  For most brides, it is a huge undertaking and any help they can get, they gladly appreciate!  So, here are a few tips on when to book those important vendors...

Now you are engaged, and the excitement is on high.  But what's next?  Maybe it isn't in the budget to hire a wedding coordinator to handle the planning for you.  So, you scour the internet looking for information on vendors, pricing, availability, looking for the ones that will fit in your budget.  You definitely want to get the most for your money, while maintaining your own style and making your day memorable.  But, what vendor do you book first?  And, how far in advance should you book them?

These are questions that almost every bride has, and I’d like to offer a few tips that may help you answer a some of these questions!

First, book what is important to you.

To start off, the vendors that you book first will be the ones that are most important to you.  It really does come down to that.  Is your location for your ceremony and reception the most important?  Then we recommend you book this first.  Venues and churches in our area are booking 12-18 months in advance.  And while booking about a year ahead in some instances is sufficient to get your desired location, high end venues sometimes can book 18-24 months out. So, don’t delay!!  Once your engagement is official, it’s time to start scheduling!

Who to book next…

That brings us to which vendors you will book next. Certain types of vendors (i.e. photographers, venues, videographers) can only book one wedding per day, and fill their calendars quickly.  Whereas, other venders like the caterer, cake decorator, florist, etc., can take on more than one in a day.  Making sure to get on the calendar for vendors that will be limited in their availability only makes sense.  In our industry, we see brides that put a high priority on good photography, making us their next email or phone call.  And very often, we are the first.  So, if you have found a photographer whose work you love, don't wait to contact them!  We are already booking into mid 2018, and the emails I regret the most are the ones where I have to tell the bride “I am sorry, but we are unavailable on that date.”

Don’t wait!  Book early!

If you are planning a wedding in the busy months of June-October, it is a good idea to book your photographer and videographer as soon as you start planning.  I get several emails and phone calls every month asking us to book on short notice.  Sadly, we are usually unable to accommodate them.

An added perk to booking a photographer early  is getting those engagement photos done in plenty of time for save-the-dates!!  We like to incorporate engagement sessions into our wedding packages.  This gives us time to get to know our clients, and allows them to be more at ease with us when we photograph them on their wedding day.  Another bonus, is the ability to assist our brides with a wedding timeline if there is not a wedding coordinator involved.  A good timeline is a M-U-S-T for a successful wedding day, and helps relieve the tension and stress of potential hiccups associated with time constraints!
